Writers' Workshop

The following pros will be teaching at this year’s Armadillocon Writers Workshop:

Looking forward to seeing you at the con!

Put your unpublished, original work of SF/F/Horror fiction in front of a pro! Sign up for the ArmadilloCon 30 Writers' Workshop and receive invaluable feedback from at least one pro writer or editor, plus critiques from fellow attendees. Fee does not include lunch on Friday but does include group sessions and panels or presentations throughout the day about the craft and profession of writing. All at a terrific, reasonable cost of only $50. You also get admission to all three days of the convention.

The ArmadilloCon Writers' Workshop has become a major event for aspiring SF/F writers. On the Friday of the convention, you will have the opportunity to have your work critiqued by major pro editors and writers. Breakout sessions will cover craft, markets, the dos and don’ts of preparing your work for professional publication, and more. Discussions range from the basics of grammar and style to plot, theme, character, and setting.

You will get an in-depth critique of your work from the teacher or teachers in your group as well as from your peers. This roundtable style critique session is invaluable for learning what works, what doesn’t, and how to edit your work.

1) $50 -- the fee includes a full con membership
2) your original work of science fiction, fantasy, or horror fiction*
3) the signed, filled out Permission Slip
4) the completed Membership Application to the address below.
* Please see the Manuscript Details, below!

We must have received all four elements (fee, manuscript, permission slip, membership form) before you are officially enrolled in the workshop! If you have not received a confirmation email within fourteen days of your sending everything in, please contact the Coordinators.

You can send a check made out to "ArmadilloCon." You may also pay via PayPal. (See the membership application for details.)

Only one submission, only your own work, and only science fiction, fantasy or horror, please!

Send your electronic manuscript in proper manuscript format to:

Writers' Workshop

You may send either a short story or the FIRST CHAPTER of a novel. If sending a complete short story, make sure you write The End on the last page; otherwise, indicate that the story continues after the first 5,000 words. If the first chapter of a novel, indicate on the first page that it is chapter one. This will ensure that the pros will be able to evaluate each ms properly.

Manuscripts longer than the maximum will be shortened at the ArmadilloCon 28 offices. We recommend that you do not go over the word limit if writing a short story as it will not be representative of the work as a whole.

Please note the Coordinators will only view the manuscript after you have bought a membership payment and the permission slip has been received.

Permission Slip

With the work you submit, you will also need to provide us with permission to distribute your story to the other workshoppers. Please print and fill out the Permission Slip and attach to your manuscript.

(If you cannot view the Permission Slip, please contact the Webmistress .)

What Happens When You Enroll

About two weeks before the workshop you will receive a packet with the manuscripts of the other students in your group along with other materials concerning the workshop, the schedule, and other information. Review and critique the mss in your group ahead of time. The bulk of the workshop time will be taken up by breaking into smaller groups for in-depth critiques of your manuscripts. The balance of the workshop will include lectures, discussions, writers' exercises, handouts, etc. from the pro writers/editors.

If you miss the workshop on Friday, August 15, we will mail your manuscript and the critiques we can gather to you. No refunds once manuscripts are mailed to the pros.

Do you have any questions about the Writers' Workshop? Please e-mail the Coordinators.
See you August 15!
